ACCE PROGRAM HIGHLIGHT

Howdy ACCE Friends

As part of our continued communication effort, we are highlighting specific accredited programs within the ACCE system. These are randomly selected schools, professional development, and workforce programs. Hopefully, this will help the ACCE community have an even better appreciation of the efforts made for accreditation,  reaccreditation, and certification.

Please note that most of the content for this Highlight is provided by the Program's website and the latest ACCE Visiting Team Report for the Program.

Central Connecticut State University

Central Connecticut State University (Central) is the largest university in the Connecticut State Colleges and Universities system. Founded in 1849, Central is also the state’s oldest publicly funded university. The University welcomed its 13th president, Dr. Zulma R. Toro, in January of 2017. She is the university’s first female president and its first Hispanic chief executive.

The university comprises five academic schools — the School of Business, the School of Engineering, Science, & Technology, the School of Education, the College of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences, and the Carol A. Ammon College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences. As a comprehensive public university, we offer quality degree programs at the baccalaureate, graduate, and doctoral levels.

Central is a proud Community Engagement University designated by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching.

Central Connecticut State University was founded in 1849 as a teacher-training facility called the New Britain Normal School. It was the sixth normal school in the United States and the oldest public university in Connecticut. In 1933, the school began granting four-year degrees and became Teachers College of Connecticut. The college continued to expand academically, earning legislative recognition as Central Connecticut State College in 1959. In recognition of the institution's continuous development, its present name and educational charter were conferred in 1983.

Central to Leading the Building Process.

Central’s BS in Construction Management prepares students for management and supervisory professions in the challenging world of construction. The curriculum focuses on field operations, estimating, and project management processes as they relate to building and heavy/highway construction projects. Analytically-based mathematics and science courses along with construction management and business courses round out the program.

Students will learn and utilize the latest computer applications throughout the academic program. Laboratory experiences, field trips, and student club activities are an integral part of the student’s academic experience.

Career Outcomes

Entry level positions such as assistant superintendent, project engineer and junior estimator are typical. Graduates soon become project managers, superintendents and chief estimators for construction management firms, general contractors and specialty contractors. Our graduates are highly sought after as a result of their acquired practical knowledge and state of the art computing skills. With this degree, our graduates progress quickly through the professional ranks.

Central’s Construction Management program, which also includes a Master of Science and a Graduate Certificate Program, has seven outstanding full-time faculty members with expertise covering all areas of the program. As of 2024, there are 270 students in the Bachelor of Science program, and our internship program and career development program ensure that all students are employed before or upon graduation. In addition to being highly professional and career-motivated, these students are very engaged in activities such as an active Construction Management Club, and regular participation in the annual Associated Schools of Construction competition (for which they earned first place in 2023).

This program is housed in Central’s Applied Innovation Hub, among other successful Engineering and Technology programs. In addition to a place of esteem on campus, the Construction Management program is also well-supported by alumni and industry leaders in the region, as evidence by an active Industrial Advisory Board and an annual Alumni and Industry Leader awards dinner.

Central’s Bachelor of Science in Construction Management program is accredited by ACCE.

That is all for now! More program highlights to come!!
