Mr. Michael Copp
Certification and Program Development Consultant
ACCE
Member Spotlight: Michael R. Copp — Building People, Programs, and Portraits

At first glance, Michael R. Copp’s career reads like a blueprint for leadership in the construction and association world—decades of executive experience, national influence, and a deep commitment to workforce development.
But spend a little more time with Michael, and another layer comes into focus—one drawn not in spreadsheets or strategy sessions, but in graphite and shadow.
Because in addition to helping shape the future of construction education, Michael is also an accomplished portrait artist.

"The more concerned we become over the things we can't control, the less we will do with the things we can control." John Wooden
A Leader Focused on Building the Workforce

In his role as a Workforce Development and Program Development Consultant for the American Council for Construction Education (ACCE), Michael continues to do what he has done throughout his career: connect people, programs, and purpose.
His work supports accreditation efforts, strengthens academic programs, and ensures alignment between education and the evolving needs of the construction industry. Whether contributing to HVACR program development or supporting ACCE’s Visiting Team process, Michael plays a key role in maintaining the high standards that define ACCE-accredited programs.
He also serves on the ACCE Board of Trustees, helping guide the organization’s strategic direction and long-term impact.
A Career Defined by Influence and Impact

Before joining ACCE, Michael built a distinguished career across some of the construction and design industry’s most influential organizations.
As CEO of the Plumbing-Heating-Cooling Contractors National Association (PHCC), he led national efforts around advocacy, education, and workforce development—supporting thousands of contractors and shaping the future of the skilled trades.
"Whatever the job you are asked to do at whatever level, do a good job because your reputation is your resume." - Madeleine Albright
His leadership journey also includes roles such as:
Chief Operating Officer, American Retirement Association
Senior Vice President of Education, National Association of Home Builders
Managing Director, American Institute of Architects
Across each position, a consistent theme emerges: a commitment to education, professional growth, and strengthening the industries he serves.
The Artist Behind the Executive

What makes Michael’s story especially compelling is how naturally his artistic talent complements his professional life.
His portrait work—such as the striking renderings of Abraham Lincoln and musician Ringo Starr—reveals meticulous attention to detail. Every line, shadow, and contour is intentional. The depth in the eyes, the subtle textures of skin, even the personality captured in a simple expression—these are not quick sketches. They are studied, patient, and deeply observant works.
"It's not me who can't keep a secret. It's the people I tell that can't.” - Abraham Lincoln
"You either kiss the future or the past goodbye."- Ringo Starr
There’s a precision in his art that mirrors his professional approach.
Where others might see a face, Michael studies structure, light, proportion, and nuance.
Where others might see a workforce challenge, he sees systems, connections, and opportunities to refine and improve.
His portraits don’t just capture likeness—they capture character.
And that ability—to truly see people—has defined his leadership as much as his art.
Creativity Meets Craft
It’s not hard to draw parallels between construction and portraiture.
Both require:
A strong foundation
An understanding of structure and form
Attention to detail
And the vision to bring something to life
Michael embodies all of these.
No matter if he's working on accreditation standards or drawing a historic figure, his approach is always disciplined, patient, and focused on excellence.
A Lasting Impression

Michael Copp’s impact on construction education is significant and ongoing. Through ACCE, he continues to help prepare the next generation of professionals and strengthen the connection between education and industry.
But his story is also a reminder that the people shaping our industry are more than their titles.
They are Thinkers. Builders. Mentors. And sometimes—artists.
"Whatever you choose to do, leave tracks. That means don’t do it just for yourself. You will want to leave the world a little better for your having lived."- Ruth Bader Ginsburg

"Watch your actions, they become your habits. Watch your habits, they become your character." - Vince Lombardi

"Michael is an invaluable resource to ACCE. With his background in construction trade associations and strong leadership, I rely on him for guidance and feedback. He is highly respected across the Council and even has hidden talents—his drawings are so impressive I initially thought mine was AI-generated. ACCE and its constituents will benefit from his commitment to the organization. " Steve Nellis.
